Week 9 - Toto, I have a feeling were not in Kansas anymore... 25 September 2023

Some of you that have visited or lived in Cape Town know its beauty and vibrancy as being a ‘one of kind’ city.  But people often forget about the negatives like crime, load shedding, poverty, and the weather.  The predictable unpredictability of the weather from one suburb to the next in the metro area of Cape Town can cause one to tear their hair out…or, tear a roof off off your outdoor braai area and tip over a shit filled port-a-potty in your front yard.  Last week, the storm was so bad that you couldn’t tell where the rain was coming from, or if ocean water was being blown across the entire city.  Wind damage, flooding, landslides and roads collapsing, all in a period of 36 hours.  Our current house that we are renting, starting leaking from numerous orifices (ooh, that sounds gross), so buckets and towels had to come to the rescue.

The next morning, we went to the build site of the new house to check on everything.  Besides water coming through the boarded up windows and one dislocated roof flashing, it seemed like the new construction held up nicely to the typhoon-like conditions.  Then we went outside to check the premises…and besides the tipped over outhouse in the front lawn, we noticed one roof missing from an area that surely had a roof the day before.  After getting over the gut punch feeling in our stomachs, our builder assured us that it could be remedied.  So we carry on with the rest of the project…

After this storm, we thought it would be a good time to add gutters to the recently finished roof…but good to know the roof will hold up even without gutters.  Next, we made huge progress on the pool…now would be a good time for some more rain to fill it for free, please.  Also, major headway on the glass doors in the front and back of the house, along with the alarm system also being completed.  Finally, one of the most important parts of the project, the laying of the screed to make sure our floors are as pristine as possible.  The top coat comes next week, so stay tune for those updated pics!!!
